    Hi Guys,

I am new here so hello to all.

I have recently bought a prime lens for my canon. It is not Canon but a compatible 50mm one.

It attached fine to the front of the camera and the aperture and focus on it work fine. I can see clearly through it on the viewfinder.

However, I cannot take a picture. I press the shutter button and nothing happens. I have it focused, I have the light correct but it simply doesn't do anything.

I imagine I am not the first with this problem so am hoping one of you kind and knowledgeable members will help me out with this.

    Thanks in advance

    James

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Just a couple of quick questions. I assume that the camera works fine with another lens attached. You are getting focus confirmation that the lens is focused. Lastly, what lens is not working? What are the details of this lens?

What happens if you select manual focus? Are you able to fire the shutter then?

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for getting back to me. I am not getting focus confirmation and the aperture display simply says zero. I have tried on manual and it is not on a timer. The lens is an eBay one from China and the name is NEWYI.

I have attached some images so hope this will help find an answer.
    Thanks

    James

By any chance is this a manual focus lens? And can you please post an image of the lens mount of the lens with the black plastic cap removed.

Okay. I think the problem that you are facing is that this lens has no contacts, so it's a dumb lens. Not the end of the world. I don't have your camera, but dive into the menu and you are looking for something along the lines of firing the shutter without a lens attached. Enable that and that should fix the shutter not firing.

I am not sure what exposure mode you are going to have to be in to meter with this lens.

go to your menu, the full one, with black background not the newbie version,
then go to the 3rd one along the top, the spanner icon, these pages are in yellow highlights.
then goto the 5th section (5) then to custom functions, tthen goto the 3rd one in this "relese shutter without lens" enable this and you should be done.
i had to do this with my manual lenses i have.

oh and you might find the lens works best if the top dial is in m for manual stuff too.

if you have any probs this is the vid i used to set mine up for a manual lens, the main bit you want starts at 6:15

Hi James, welcome to the forum, I have a similar lens for my D60 only it's a 85mm F1.8.
It's all manual and has I have not had a issue with it.
I use it mainly in manual or aperture priority.
