Thanks for that, the shot was taken at Gigrin farm in Wales where they feed the Kites daily, when they put the food out there can be up to six hundred birds circling overhead and diving in to grab what they can, I found that it got easier as the birds thinned out a bit so I could follow one bird and with luck get a good shot.
When i went to wales for my sister in laws wedding we stayed in a farm cottage in/near Pyle, apart from being able to run around the feilds naked there were quite a few birds of prey being flown in the distance, some time before i had a decent camera though. If i do ove over to the west of England wales is a place i'd love to shoot in, great landscapes etc
I am in Wales been to Gigrin a few times I often see a kite when photographing ponies but never get a decent shot
Great action from the kite Jim! Nice clear and detailed image - good bokeh as well. Maybe a bit more positive space in the direction it's looking into. Easy in PP to add that. Lovely work.
Unfortunately there isn't really any option for extending the positive space either below or to the right of the bird as they are the edges of the original shot, all the cropping was done on the top and left edges of the frame. This image is one of a series of shots of the same bird and is the one that has the bird in the best pose but unfortunately near the edge of the frame so restricting the options for composition.
Thanks for that Jim, much appreciated. There are simple ways to do this in Photoshop without changing the integrity of the image or the subject - just a subtle edit.
was that an automated expand to new frame edges or a manual cut,paste,blur affair? good execution on the re-framing isac
I like the edit Isac, but unfortunately I don't have the patience to learn some of the techniques involved with this type of editing, I'm ok with basic stuff like cropping and minor exposure adjustments but with anything much more than that I get frustrated very quickly if I can't pick it up readily and my "technology triggered Tourette's" kicks in. This is why I use Photoshop Elements and rely heavily on some of the automatic editing features.
yeah i get like that too, its fun verses editing, canon jpeg wins over having to edit raw. (yeah i know raw is better data)
Thanks for the question Caladina. This is not a difficult edit in Photoshop. First I made a new document the same size as the image (in this case 1920 x 1072 @ 72 PPI) then I dragged the Kite image into the document as Layer 1. Then I added canvas to the image of 20% to the right and 40% to the bottom. This made the image 2304 x 1501. I copied Layer 1 (Original Kite) twice to Layer 2 and Layer 3. Then I made a selection of the bird on Layer 3 and applied it to a layer mask. I made a selection of the bird again (Ctrl + Click on Layer Mask), added 10 pixels to expand the selection and on Layer 2 used "Content Aware Fill" to remove the bird. I then stretched Layer 2 to fit the larger canvas. I hope this helps. If anyone needs Photoshop assistance I'm here to help. These are the layers as described above.
Thanks for the reply Jim. It's all a learning curve so just be happy doing what you're doing. In saying that, editing can be quite rewarding.
i currently have the ps5 that came with my mac book, i've not really tried much heavy ps but i'll make something up just for the sake of it.
