not sure if there is a section specifically on vintage lenses which work great on modern cameras. I've seen some youtube vids with vintage lenses of all different makes being used on canon cameras. Do any of you old bas.........fellas have joyful experiences mounting vintage glass onto eos canons? the ones i have been looking at are fast fully manual ones or ones with a canon origin. i'm thinking the fully manual ones would be pretty easy to mount and use with the various adapters out there.
I use Nikons, Leica, Schneider-Kruznach,Pentax screw mount and Mamiya medium format lenses on most all my Canons...fun, fun, fun!
No idea. But I am eyeing up a adaptor or two for my R mount camera. I would like a EOS R to Pentax K mount lens. Gary
Calidina, I use old film lenses all the time and I get very good results, at the moment i am having a thing for M42 mount lenses and canon FD and FL lenses. The only issue I have had is a FD to EOS adapter that did not have glass to allow the lens to focus to infinity, it was totally useless and I requested my money back. I have had no issues with the M42 adapters. You will need to use live-view on the back of your camera for fine focus, just press the magnify button a couple of times to bring up 10x magnification, then focus. Image should come up nice and sharp.
I have used my Mamiya 645 medium format lenses on my 1D mark 3 camera and the resulting images are excellent
yes i have already ordered up a couple of 42 adapters one for ef and one for m i have been looking at alot of youtube reviews and general ramblings from vintage lens buffs, all very interesting. Helios 42 58mm f2is one i have been looking at, quite a few variants on that the series.
I have a collection of M42 lenses, mostly Takumars, and I have two M42 to Canon EF adapters. One has contacts on the back and one doesn't. My 1Ds won't even turn on if I use the adapter with no contacts. It is happy when I use the one with contacts even though they are not transferring any data from the lens. It does however give focus confirmation. The 20D works with both adapters but the adapter with no contacts allows me to use AV mode with the old manual Takumars. Of course, only lenses with a manual aperture ring can be used. If I choose to use Manual mode on the camera i just guess at a shutter speed/aperture combination, take a shot and look at the histogram and modify the settings where needed. I have been impressed with the results I have been able to achieve. Here's an image produced with the 1Ds and a Super-Takumar 85mm f1.9:
Nice image Ray. I do not have your issue with my 1D mark 3 as it works fine with the adapter with no contacts but my FD to EOS adapter is a little tight when fitted to the 1D but the FDto EOS adapter fits fine on the 60D.

Craig, the 1Ds was Canon's first entry into the full frame field so it is quite likely that there were some things that needed to be improved and catering for adapters was probably not high on the list. By the time they got to the Mk 3 I expect that had time to make a few refinements. The total cost for my two adapters was less than $20 and they both work in their own way. All is well.
i have a carl zeiss jena ddr flektogon 2.8 35mm and an eos m - m42 adapter i also have an ef - m42 so far neither adapter has given me any sort of image the eos m - m42 has a flange to flange of 27mm , i have also tried a whole load of extension tubes for m including sitting the lens on the m50 mount, does anyone know if this lens can be paired with a canon M camera or could i just have a dud lens , it does have some marks on the assembly slots so it has been opened at some point. does any one know the correct distance to sensor of the lens? or where to find it Thanks
Caladina, I have a heap of M42 mount lenses I use on my canon cameras, that includes film and digital. I also have this lens in the 50mm, my lens has been dropped and damaged so I have had to do a bit of panel beating to be able to focus. I still get good images from it. I looked up on Youtube and this shows examples of the lenses being used. Given this I would ask if some-one has stripped the lens down at some stage and incorrectly re-assembled it. I suggest you either buy, beg, borrow or steal another M42 mount lens and try that lens and see what happens, you should be getting some good images.
thanks for the info, i do have another M42 on the way Asahi Pentax f1.8/55mm Super Takumar Prime Lens, M42 fit i'll see how tht goes i mounted the adapter on the M50 and it is around 45.46 from the marked sensor plane so that should be ok. while the lens is off the camera i open up the aperture of the lens to fully open and look through it i see a clear image of what i'm looking at, is this normal for one of these types of lens?
Sorry for the short answer before. But have a look at this link........ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flange_focal_distance You will see that M42 is the same flange distance as Pentax K. So what is the problem that you are experiencing? Is the image with this adapted lens out of focus, so you can't achieve focus? Or is the image is black? The shutter won't fire? i have used fully manual lenses so i have the fire without lens on the problem with this lens is the image is just a blur of light, no real image to see, i'm thinking that it might have been opened up and resembled wrong or an element might be missing, not sure. i have another 42 lens on the way so i'm waiting to see what happens with that. the aperture blades seem to be working fine.
craig do you have a pic of the rear end of your lens, just want to see if mine looks the same where the rear element is.
On the second image, does the infinity symbol line up with the infinity mark? Or does it stop before or past it? Gary
