So, I have been doing some research into this lens and it seems I need to add it to my kit as a portrait lens. However, for a couple of months, it's been out of stock everywhere. Seems odd. Does this mean the lens is being replaced? Confused.

A 100mm length works pretty well if you are doing a 2/3 crop or tighter. The standards for portrait are 35/50/85 if we are talking 35mm film or full frame; they exist for those reasons and preferences. They allow for a good range between full length, 3/4 and head and shoulder crops. The 100mm L is a great lens and I think worth a purchase, you may find it too sharp for portraits as it will show every pore on the person. That can be easily tweaked in post however. Honestly I think if you shoot mainly portraits you would be better off with the 50 1.4 and 85 1.8 which together would be cheaper and give you faster lens if you want to get a nice soft bokeh in the portraits.
I think that Canon now have a RF mount macro lens available, so there will be a slow drift away from the EF mount. But as far as I know Canon are still producing EF lenses. I am sure that someone will correct me if I am wrong. Gary

Thanks John I already have a 50mm sigma art and found that when I get really close I get big noses. The 100mm seems to be a good complement?
Generally I expect used to be in the 40-60% of new range based on condition and demand of the item. It may be on the high side but availability is low so its not surprising. The non L is pretty sharp and a good lens, I have it, and can't really reason with myself to upgrade to the L, I'm sure you could pick that up for only a few hundred off of ebay used.
Yep it should be a good compliment, nice focal length, clearly I have something similar (one of the first few lenses I got over 15 years ago when I went digital) so do I like the idea. I just like it better for high detail and picked up the 85 for tight portraits instead, which was my warning it may be a bit too sharp .
i mentioned them as i have used them a fair bit and their delivery and service is good. the prices reflect the quality of the lens depending on its condition,
I have used MPB to buy a couple of "as new" lenses and components, and they have been in excellent condition. Much cheaper than buying new, with negligable loss. Having said that though, I also bought a Sigma 105mm, f2.8 macro lens in Canon fit elswhere, new. This has proved to be a very good lens at my level of photography, but to be fair I use it mostly for macro pics. I don't have the Canon to do a direct comparison, but the reviews on the Sigma are very good. You can get the Sigma new for about £350 too.
