I wonder if someone could help? My 650D is fantastic, but lately it has started being unable to recognise SD cards, that it previously had no problems with. I've tried taking out the battery and card mutiple times, and eventually this works, but only with the HC cards up to 16GB in size - previously it would recognise 64GB cards with no pronlems. Once it does recognise a card and allows a format, that card usually works fine until I remove the battery to charge, take that card out (which is when I need to keep taking the card out and reinserting it, over and over again, until the camera recognises the card) or I leave the camera unpowered for a week or two. Does anyone know what is causing this issue, and if I can fix this myself at home somehow? I've tried cleaning the contacts within the card reader using isopropyl alcohol - I don't touch the contacts directly, I put a few drops onto a dead SD card and insert insert that into the camera and remove a few times to clean, then try a card which I know works, once it has dried. Whether or not this works is unclear, because the camera recognises 16GB cards after about 20 or so minutes of insterting and removing cards anyway (if I'm lucky). It's a gigantic pain. The reason why I've tried isopropyl, is because I suspect that the camera is damp within... I was in sustained rain for several hours, and although the camera seemed dry within it's foam case, the camera rucksack wasn't - the problems got worse after that, but it could be coincidental.

Try cleaning the SD card contacts in the camera, I don't know if this will fix the problem, but it will ensure the camera can read the card

Thank you for your reply! What's the best way to clean the SD contacts inside the camera? I have isoprpyl alcohol but it's a very thin slot - what can I use that's safe to insert daubed in isopropyl, that won't damage/bend the contacts?

To be honest I am guessing here but I suggest, a very thin plastic material fold a piece of lens cleaning cloth over it and put the cleaner on it and gently wipe the contacts with it.
Idea number two get an old sd card fold some thin lens cleaning tissue folding over it and squirting some cleaning fluid you have on it and gently insert it several times. you may need a good pair of tweezers to grasp the sd card to move it in and out of the slot. Warning I am only guessing so caution will be needed or have a look on you tube and investigate the problem there. all the best with it,

I'm not feeling great about the idea of cleaning inside here, and if inside was dirty i dont see how the battery would make a difference if removed and charrged.

Can I assume you haven't updated firmware or anything recently? That may help if there is a firmware glitch, if this is electrical i don't think you can fix. Does the camera still hold the date when changing battery, maybe replacing the clock battery would be a good idea?

Nothing has changed - no firmware updates have been available for years.

I can't abide the interminable delay of 20 minutes or more of trying to get the camera to recognise a SD card, shortly before I have to take photos... so I cut out an SD card shape out of a thin piece of plastic (one of those credit card sized things that SIM cards arrive in), cut some paper to cover it at the end (folded over), stuck it to the plastic with gaffa tape (other end of the card, which wasn't going to be inserted), then soaked the paper end with isopopyl (which was folded over the end of the plastic SD card shape), and gently inserted into the card slot and wiggled it about. That didn't work... SD card still not recognised, no oxidisation was visible on the paper... so I squeezed some drops of isopopyl into the card slot and held it upside down straightaway, so that the isopopyl immediately flowed out - I did that to prevent ingress of the isopropyl further into the case. Now it's working fine (so far) with the 16GB SD Kingston HC card, but not with the 32GB Sandisk, which appears as locked when attempting to use with a Windows XP PC (yes, I know, dinosaur OS). The 32GB Sandisk worked fine in Windows 7, but only after a diskpart "Clean" and a format. Sadly the 32GB doesn't yet work in camera, but it used to. Is/was it a contact oxidisation issue? I don't know - but it does happen more often now, after the camera was transported in very rainy weather, then stored for some days in a damp camera case (I wasn't aware it was so damp). Whether or not the 16GB card is still recognised after a day or two of the camera being powered down; battery removed, is the question I'll be trying to answer next.

They say, Canon 650D can support up to 128 GB of SD card storage. Such problem should not arise due to camera. I think it could your SD Card. You can try to restart your camera.
    · Set the camera's power switch to <OFF> and remove the batteries.
    · Open the Memory card slot cover to make sure the memory card is securely set in the card slot.
    · Insert the batteries and turn the power switch <ON>
Also, formatting the memory card with your camera can help fix your problem. If that also fails, then card that wasn't detected may have a defect. You can check this blog to know more. https://www.stellarinfo.com/blog/fix-sd-card-wont-mount-recognized-error/
