This is a Tasmanian Native Hen, they live in and around our communities, this one was wandering around where my were students were photographing.
They are an odd looking bird Craig but they fit into the environment perfectly. Lovely image in its natural habitat. There's not many flightless birds left but these appear to be thriving, now that their main predator (Thylacine Tasmanian Tiger) is now extinct. We have similar over here in the West, mainly Australasian Swamphens (Purple Swamphen) and the Dusky Moorehen. Huge feet, perfect for wading through the swamps and lakes.
In the last 10 years there number have increased massively, as you have said the Thylacine has been declared extinct but there have been numerous sightings which is encouraging. I think the reason the Native hens are doing so well is the environment that the birds have available to them in the form of parks, rivers and creeks within the local communities.
Good info Craig - Thanks. For some reason I'm not getting notifications if someone responds so I'll need to see if I can rectify that.
