Hi, I am getting a communications error 1 when I use an EF 400mm f5.6. Cleaning the contacts did not help. No problem if I switch to a different lens. If I try to use this lens, the shutter stalls, then clicks, but no picture is taken. Cannot try again, or if I do, nothing happens unless I turn camera completely off, then on again. It happens again immediately. The view in viewfinder is weird—dark with tint, spirals. This started suddenly. Adjusting the connection by re-installing lens or jiggling does not help. Any ideas? I am taking to camera shop, but I know they are so far behind, I will be without the lens during holidays…

Probably a dirty connection on the lens...

As sad as it sounds, it looks as if it is going to be a trip to the camera doctor. I can't offer any other suggestions to try other than what you have already done.

I was simply stating the issue would be with lens contacts, if they are not corroded they may be damaged.
    What do they look like?

UPDATE—The owner of the camera repair shop states my “iris is frozen.” States he can 100% fix this, but will need to determine what parts he needs when he opens it up. Some parts are back-ordered. Of note, he says this happens to all lenses eventually, “not a question of if, but when.” Well, specifically, he said Canon lenses, but he is a Nikon guy, so I took this into consideration.
If nothing else, I am learning a lot about how cameras work!

I was worried about damage after cleaning did not work, but turns out it is my “iris” (see below). This is a great group, and I am learning a lot reading old posts.

Welcome to he forum, Wanda. Down here in Tasmania at the bottom of the world, no such local business is available, every thing has to be sent out of the state or overseas, greatly adding to the cost of repair.

Oh, no! I drove 20 minutes from work to the shop. For $440, it can be fixed…in that regard I am lucky.

I have this lens, and I am more than happy with it. I am pleased that you are able to get it fixed.
