    Hi all.

New user here with what may seem a silly query.

We were recently given an old Canon EOS 300D camera.

I have got a new battery and a CF Adaptor and a SD card. Put it all together and went to turn it on and I get the E 05 error message which, according to the manual, means there is something wring with the pop up flash operation.

When I push the button to open the flash nothing happens - but it will open manually.

From what I can see when it is open, all the bits that should move do so as they shoould but the button just does not release the catch.

The error message will not go away, even if I switch the camera off and then back on.

    Any assistance or advice appreciated.

    Cheers
    Michael

In the flash shoe, just under the side of the spring, there is a tiny black pin this operates a switch to sense if anything is fitted in the shoe and inhibits the release button. It is quite common for this pin to get stuck in the down position, usually a bit of careful prodding with a cocktail stick will release it.

    Thanks Ray.

I checked the pin and it goes up and down but somehow it is not getting released when I push the Flash button at the side of the flask unit. I pushed the pin up and down and the catch back and forth while I had the Flash unit open, but when I push the button it does nothing.

    Cheers
    Michael

Sounds as though you may have a different problem then. Unless you want to send it off for repair you may just have to resort raising the flash manually, assuming the flash still fires ok.

    Thanks again.
I think I may have to try to get it repaired because the camera won't move past having the error message. It just won't operate. Thanks anyway. Merry Xmas.

    Hello Mike,

Where are you from? Canon has repair centers in major cities, and each country has repair centers you can send in to, you may be able to get it fixed before your trip.

What my concern is here if you have a 300d its a 6MP camera from 2003, these are worth last i checked maybe 30-50 bucks on ebay, and honestly cameras twice the specs and half the ages are also under a hundred dollars used. If you can drop off local and get the repair done for say ~$20 why not go for it, otherwise I think your better off putting that money towards a better body that is fully functional and not 20 years old :D.

Even shipping isn't cheap if it has to be mailed, I think it cost me $30 after shopping around and going fedex, 15 years ago when i sent my 20d in for something under warranty.

Thanks for all of that. There is nowhere local. We are in North West NSW, about 10 hours drive from Sydney. I will just take it with us ansmd if I see a Canon repairer will get it checked. Otherwise, will do as you suggest and check e-Bay and FB marketplace for a replacement. It was a "gift" on which I have already had to spend about $100AUD for replacement battery, charger and storage card. Oh well.
