Hey folks, so an issue has sprung up over the last two shoots I've done: the image looks darker it looks darker both on the LCD and through the view finder it happened both with OCF with a Profoto transmitter and in natural lighting conditions settings DID NOT change - they were: 1/400; f5.6; ISO 5000 The camera & lens: 6d mkii Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 Please refer to the reference images to see what I mean: all three images were shot at the exact same settings. Am wondering if it's an issue with the shutter getting stuck halfway through its action... is that a thing? I've heard of the shutter on DSLRs getting stuck in the closed position, so am just wondering if it could be that... Any help or insights would be appreciated.
Are we positive settings did not change? Can you share the matching metadata in screen captures to confirm? One thing I am noticing is the darker two have sharp people and bleachers in the background. While the focus point looks to have shifted, it also at first glance seems you have stopped down a few stops and increased your depth of field, that would have darkened the image if the others did not change. Again this is a very quick look at what seems to be happening. That would have caused me to check my metadata on the raw image.
I would note that a shutter issue would exhibit with no image or part of the image cut off where the curtain did not open all the way.

Would it be possible to share the raw files to dig into metadata? You may have something like auto bracketing on.
Can't upload RAWs to the forum here... only JPEG or equivalent. But would the auto-bracketing affect the viewfinder as well...? Cuz that's what made me kinda freakout and think it had something to do with the shutter/mirror action: when I looked through the viewfinder, the whole thing was dark - just like the image that I captured.
Ok so the back of the camera is brighter than the JPG, the jpg looks like multiple steps of aperture different (including increased depth of field,) despite the camera saying it was set to 5.6. My assessment without much tinkering with the gear is that the aperture is getting stuck. If you press the DOF button on the camera, it will show the shutter stopped down in the viewfinder, the fact this is happening without pushing the button and seems to be stopping down further than it is set implies a lens issue. I would see if other lenses behave the same. I would think it is a lens malfunction.. If the mirror or shutter was the issue, you would be missing part or all of the image, both of them move across the image sensor in one way or another so they would block the image not darken evenly.
What happens when you try another lens on your camera? Do you get the same problem? Have you also tried cleaning the lens contacts on both the lens and the camera? I think that it is more of a lens problem than a camera problem. Gary
Ah-ha! Didn't even know that was a thing, but that seems to make a lot of sense. Haven't noticed in on any other lenses, but I've mostly been only using my telephoto for portraits and sports. It's a Sigma and has been through the wars so it might be time to upgrade. Doing another couple shoots so will see how it performs over the next few days and post an update if there are any other developments. Thx!
Good idea, Gary - will look into that for sure. It def now seems like it's a lens issue. Am relieved that it's probably not anything to do with the shutter.... Good excuse to get some new gear! Will post if there are any new developments. Thx Team Canon!
