    Interesting image, John. What is the history behind this medal. I have been gifted my father's national service medal.

    Hi Craig - it is one of the group of 5 which my father was awarded for his service in the RAF in WWII.

    The group (prior to proper mounting in their display case, which I must get on and do) is below.

    None of these is an award for gallantry or anything like that, they are a recognition of the fact that you served your country and they indicate the sphere of operations you were in. In Dad's case, there is the Atlantic Star because he flew anti-U boat missions around the British Isles and the Burma Star because he ended the war in 8 Squadron out in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka).
