Hi guys, I recently bought a few Canon entry level DSLRs - a rebelT-5 and a Rebel Xsi. I am really struggling to get the autofocus to work. I have reset the cameras, tried multiple lenses, reset the focal points, but nothing seems to work. When I press the shutter in manual, the shutter snaps, but when I use Auto focus, the camera will not fire a shot. I can see in the viewfinder, a flashing green light in the bottom right with a number next to it, but I don't know what that number means. I can see shutter speed, ISO, aperture and exposure compensation, but can't work out the additional number. Does anyone know how to remedy this situation? Thanks in advance...
I can't give you a do this or do that answer that will fix your problems, but I do have a few thoughts. When you say reset the camera, what do you mean by that? Is that a full factory reset? Have you cleaned the lens and body contacts? What does the flashing green light look like? That will give us a big clue to why the camera will not fire. And have you had a look for a user manual online to see what this flashing light means? Does the lens even try to focus when you half press the shutter button? Gary
The flashing green circle in the viewfinder means that the lens isn't focused, once focus has been found the circle will just show green and stop flashing. The number next to the circle is the focal length of your lens. These are all explained in the user manual. Make sure that the switch on the side of your lens is switched to AF and try taking a shot outdoors in daylight because if the scene is too dark then there may not be enough light for the camera to achieve focus, indoors the light levels may be much lower than they appear because your eyes are constantly compensating for differing light levels
"The AF switch is set to on. Thanks for that. i tired taking a pic outside but same problem. The thing that is confusing me is that I bought an older TSi and the camera wouldn't take pics in Auto-focus. I thought it was because the camera or lens were old and screwed, so I bought a newer camera body. It came with the same kit-lens (18-55) and I have exactly the same problem. It's driving me crazy. If anyone has any other suggestions, I'd be really grateful"
im going to meet the girl i bought the camera off tomorrow for the user manual. Also no the camera wont even try to foucs
If she can't show you it focusing well when you meet her and explain why you had an issue with focus, then she sold you a broken camera and should allow you to return them. It should try to focus and focus easy unless its really dark, unless there is something like the MF switch on the lens set. I'm 50/50 on if you missed something vs her selling a broken camera.
