This months photo challenge is "B&W". Intentionally shoot your subjects for B&W, subject and composition are your friend in this one, not interesting colors. You can de-saturate or post process as you like to get the B&W. But look for good lighting and aim for a good range of contrast. Subject matter is wide open though! Its like going back to a film class!

    Happy shooting!

    Again, the rules are simple:
    • Should be be using some canon gear , this is a canon forum after all.
    • Shot with the assignment in mind, go out and shoot something new don't dig up something from the archives.
    • and most importantly have fun.

    Imperfect perfect.
The image, technically is not perfect and nor was it meant to be when shot, it was deliberately shot against a window in full sun with a slow enough shutter speed to blow out the whites to blend the background and subject whites into one.

some of the other features i tend to go with or make happen with black and white is to have them look like they could have been shot with much older equipment or a snap shot type of image from a long time ago.

the bright light coming into the front of the lens has done alot of the work here reducing the contrast and washing out the blacks and softening the image overall.

image was shot in monochrome jpeg as i do love shooting for black and white in monochrome when i intend the image to be as shot, to which this is just that, if i intend to change tones etc i'll shoot it in colour then have the colour data to manipulate, as for jpeg its what i always use.

shot as always with the M50 with the sigma 17-50mm ex os, @ 50mm, ƒ2.8, ss1/50, iso 320

You were quick off the mark with this one Caladina. What I like about your image is the background is very bright, which has enhanced the face which inturn has shown up the eyes. As a black and white, this has been well done.

I have ripped off, no that's not it, coppied, no that's not the word , was inspired by Caladina's lovely image, This is a B & W image of my little Muggingsworth.
It's not 100% sharp as I hand held the camera.

Thank you Caladina, Mugginsworth likes to lay on the back of this chair and see what is going on in the street through the part in the curtains.
The gradient from black to white in the background was achieved by the evening light coming through the gap onto Mugginsworth's face and fading out due to the angle the light was coming into the room.

Without getting old man creepy, possibly the removal would be more interesting.
Maybe a little on the finger for the cats to lick off.

A nice little series there, Derrick, may I suggest , when you upload your images, you get two choices. Thumbnail and full image.
If you click on full image, this will allow you to have it so, when viewing they are not small and will not require anyone viewing them the need to enlargen the image.

I was bored and took out my Canon 1D and a 28 to 200 mm lens.
The lens is being a pain and is not quite focusing right for sharp images, I will need to do something about one day

Thanks Derrick & Craig. A simple setup with tripod mounted Canon 5D MkII, Speedlight flash off-camera on a tripod to the side, remote flash trigger and a piece of my black darkroom curtain as backdrop. The incense stick was held on a light stand with a rubber band and the camera pre-focussed on where I guessed the smoke would be rising. It can be very frustrating as the slightest air movement affects the smoke but it can be rewarding as you've really no idea what you've captured until you look - a very low 'hit rate' unfortunately but very enjoyable.

It's a pity about the focus issue Craig but these are nice images with a good sense of 'place'. The feathered 'rats' in my town are pigeons and they cause extensive damage to buildings with their droppings. Interesting to see the Woolworths name again, the stores in the UK all closed down in 2009.

Thanks, Thumbnail, I would replace it but it is my favourite lens that I have had for years.
