Where's infinity?

The longer the focal length, the larger the working distance. Hence the reason of some macro lenses having a focal length of 180mm.

I've been leaning more to their 100mm - BUT - twice so far I've read about concerns with the non-temperature-stable grease Laowa uses - one guy, a pro photog, had his lens in his bag, and when he retrieved the lens from the bag, he observed that , the grease had begun to melt - not a good thing thing for a len's innards.

Granted, my shooting is indoors, table top, so one would think that there'd be no problems - but the location of the table is in the path of the flow of air from the air conditioner, and the A/C it needs to be turned off because the wind flutters delicate subjects, such as leaves, making them difficult to focus upon, and then - I live in tropical climate south Florida, so, like the Seminole Indians, I have reservations, about the Laowa lenses.

Your thoughts?

I hadn't heard about the grease problem, probably yet another reason to avoid their lenses.
Personally I would recommend the Canon 100m f2.8 macro, you don't necessarily need the latest L version with IS because you don't really need IS for the majority of macro shots.
Rather than turn off your aircon have you tried some sort of physical shield to prevent the moving air from blowing on your subject, even a small light tent would achieve this.

 

for table top 2:1 macro i would go with Laowa as the optics are amazing,
they are a very freindly company i've asked them questions before both in email and phone (uk)

if you have any concerns over the grease melting point etc drop them an email see what they say,

 

I've considered shielding the A/C, but haven't arrived at a doable solution. Perhaps more of my "grey matter" will activate and make me a happy camper.
The Canon is WAY too expen$ive for just an initial interest in macro with a macro lens.
Tomorrow I'll be receiving a Tokina 100mm 6344 ATX-i 2.8 to try for a month, ala Amazon - we'll see how that goes.

Good idea. Not only will I contact them, I'll also try to communicate with Thomas Shahan, who has been using the 100 (a gift from Laowa), since he's involved in shootings insects in different climes.
In the meantime, I'm going to be receiving a Tokina 6344 ATX-i 100mm tomorrow, and I've a month to find fault (hopefully not) before returning it to Amazon.

try Stewart Wood on youtube, he has done some videos with the 100mm Laowa, he mostly does jumping spiders
if price is an issue see if you can get a copy of the sigma 105mm ƒ2.8 EX OS, its still available new but there are lots turn up second hand,

I've been checking out Srewart and Allan, Lee Hall and others, and you've provided good info to me.
Today I received, ala Amazon, a Tokina ATX-i 100mm 2.8 1:1 lens, and first impressions are mind blowing - see the unretouched image!
