Want a long lens and considering this one.
Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS II USM
Is this a good choice for surfing photography tripod mounted?
Will this lens be fully compatible with an EOS 7D
If not what do you suggest?
    Thanks

No idea to be honest with you. I am not sure how close you can get, nor what sort of images that you are after. But I think that it would be an excellent starting point. Would I use it with a tripod? I am not sure. It would be a little bit of trial and error. I would guess that being at a beach photographing surfers that there would be lots of light around, so you would be able to get away with handholding your gear, and having a reasonably fast shutter speed. But don't quote me on that.

    Yes, no problems at all.

I think that it would be a good starting point. The flexibility of a zoom. In time you may want a longer lens, but you have to start somewhere to get a feel for what images you are looking for, and what images that you get out of your gear.

I used this lens on my 5D Mk II back in the mid noughties and found that it was super sharp and the IS was brilliant. However, it is a heavy and rather cumbersome beast for handholding action shots, especially the push/pull zoom, so I used a gimbal mount on my Manfrotto monopod which made shooting so much easier. Whatever you choose enjoy you photography.
Hmm, I wonder if there may be a risk with sand and that push/pull mechanism? Just a thought......

By all means, please correct me if I am wrong. But the mark version of the lens is a push/pull zoom action.

Where as the mark ll version replaced this feature with a twist of a ring type of action.

What the weight difference between the two lenses are, I have no idea.

Sorry, I mis-read the spec. From what I read on the 'net and Canon, the Mk I weighs in at 1380 gms and the Mk II at 1640 gms.

I had a quick rummage around on the net and found that Canon had put the mark ll version on a fast food diet as well.
