I’m looking at adding a 5D Mark II or III, but trying to gather where the 6D fits in comparison. It almost feels like it competes with the 5D series.

My current DSLR is an 1D Mark II. As much as I love it, it is more of a handful since my 3 shoulder surgeries.

Any thoughts or comments on it?

    Thanks!

You did not mension the type of photography you do. I have the 1D mark 3 And it is a bit of a brick, reading what you have put up your problem is a weight based one, all three cameras are excellent at what they do. Personbally I think you have 2 options , 1 use a tripod more often or 2 have a look at micro four thirds as they may be a lighter option.

I’ve wanted to do landscape but haven’t done much at all. I’ve done a bunch of drag strip racing photography and some night city scapes. But landscape and trying to add the Milky Way and starry nights in the night scapes is my dream to do.

The 1D is for sure a brick!

I am not sure what you budget is, but what about the 6Dii? I am just thinking of this option as it has a flippy screen that maybe of benefit with astro stuff, instead of trying to look through and compose your image in a viewfinder.

I think you will find any of them lighter than your 1d, as long as you leave a grip off. As Craig mentioned there are other smaller lighter options, but I will assume you want to stick in a prosumer DSLR since your asking about 5D and 6D bodies.

The 5D series is a step between the 6D and the 1D, actually more accurately the 6D was introduced after the 5Dmk2 as a more budget full frame. The 6Dmk2 was noticeable upgrade feature wise on the first 6D.

Cost: 5dmk2 is a great value, i still use and love mine. I would get this over an original 6D in a heart beat, their cost is probably about the same used.
Best Camera : The 5dmk4 is great and prob the best gear you can buy in the line.
Next Best option 5dsR this 50 mp monster is nice, it is sort of an upgraded to the 5d3 body, with a beefy sensor. They clearanced these out of the stores 2 years ago for like 1500 bucks which was a steal. If you can snag one for a decent price its strong contender.
Other Considerations: The 6d2 is a real solid camera and may be worth the purchase when comparing the features and prices against the others I like above. I would shy away from a used 5dmk3, many people complained of screen and auto-focus issues after they came out so there were warranty repairs, it seems like a half-hearted upgrade to the mark 2 and people were less than thrilled, I would fade this body as its over 10 years old and and i think a low usage mark 2 may be a safer purchase if you want an older body and budget type purchase.

Hope this helps, some of this is based on opinion, so others may have a slightly different view on parts of what I have said.
