Hi. Being new to photo printing I need some advice regards the Pro Premium media type in the Canon Pro200 list.

I have some Pro Premium Matte papers but am confused as which media type is required. There is either Matte or Pro Premium to choose from.

Is the Pro Premium media setting intended for this paper as I'm not sure if Pro Premium range also includes semi gloss and gloss varieties.

Just stating Pro Premium in the list is too vague and the on line manuals do not seem to give any more details.

Hope the question is not too stupid so hope for a simple answer in due course.

    Thanks.

Hard to troubleshoot the exact paper profiles you have installed, but I am assuming its for you premium matte profile in the list.

There are multiple matte papers so the have separate profiles i think the name is truncated. There are also custom profiles for non canon papers out there to match the thickness and absorption of each paper to ideal levels, but i doubt you installed anything but what came with the printer..

That being said selecting a matte profile for a matte paper should be a very decent print either way even if its not the perfect one, the canon the premium matte will go a little heavier on the ink to match the heavier paper.

Thanks for your reply. I would like to clarify my query better. The printer (Canon Pro200) is new with no customisations made. I've carried out a full installation using the drivers and set up from the Canon website rather than the supplied disk. I'm wanting to print on Canon paper (the Pro Premium Matte).

The only media choices I have on the printer screen are either Pro Premium OR Matte papers.

I have now also installed the Canon Print & Layout software. In this programme to set up the print run I can indeed see, and select a media type called Pro Premium Matte. Clearly this is the correct one.

I have now also installed Canon's Media Configuration Tool on my PC. This lists for me the media types available. On this list I see the Pro Premium Matte type. It also dated it is saved to the printer but looking on the screen on the printer it is not there.

This seems very odd and confusing.

Is the Pro Premium media type shown on the printer screen actually the Pro Premium Matte or are there Pro Premium Glossy and semi matte papers too?

So setting the media type in the Printing software does this take president over that entered at the printer. Is there any need for them both to be selected and the same?

I look forwards to your thoughts

The ones above are the primary professional photo paper names. They are Pro Premium Matte, Pro Luster and Pro Platinum.
If it says Premium in the profile it would be Matte, canon install should give you a list of glossy / luster and matte with names similar to the list.

Regarding some of the question about semi matte or premium glossy....
Platinum is canons premium high gloss photo paper for example. They use "Platinum" as the designation not "Premium High Gloss", Premium matte is simply a simple way of designating a more pro/art grade matte paper between regular matte and fine art rough.
Matte is the complete absence of shine/gloss so there is no semi-matte paper, I guess you could consider semi-gloss also semi-matte, similarly to semi-sweet chocolate, but its not called semi-bitter. :)
If you look at the list the top is the most glossy, and it works all the down way to rough porous fine art paper.

I guess there is a confusion over the Print options on the printer and the ones on your computer. The printer has preset installed profiles if you have the option for basic printing from wifi via a device or from a usb stick.. You may be able to update these options, probably through a firmware upgrade. I cant speak to your exact print since i have never used that one.

When putting more control into a print you need specific profiles installed in the printing profile folder location and they need to be readable by the software sending the print to the printer for the software to give you that option. This would be where you set your paper, if the computer shows the printer and the profile for the paper in the printing program that is what it will use. SO for me, I print from Lightroom and select my Canon pro 100 printer and select premium matte paper if that is the paper. And it sends that to the printer to follow those print instructions.

I guess that config tool you mentioned is the new way of managing what profiles they give you as an option directly from canon out of the box, in my older setup you had a packaged file of all profiles to install and depending on windows/vs mac you may have had a smoother time. Then if I say was using MOAB paper i just went and downloaded and installed the right paper profile package for the paper i bought.

For context here is some info from canon pertaining to your printer/ the config tool/ profiles, and an article about my setup/ and what i was saying about making sure the computer has the profiles stalled where the printer knows about them. The info still is relevant if you print on papers other than the canon ones supplied in your tool.
