Hello I'm looking at buying a second hand lens for my 1d mk iii Camera body. I've been doing alot of Wildlife photography using my 400mm prime Lens but I'm finding it hard too get on with it as obviously a fixed Lens. I'm wondering if anyone could possibly recommend a half decent zoom lens too use with the d1 body. Many thanks.
Any of the 70-200 L lenses are great lenses, of course they aren't as long as your 400mm however. You can get zooms 100-400 but I think having a smaller 70-200 actually would pair well with the 400 prime, since you can always put the prime on if you need the extra reach. Any longer than that your looking at primes anyway so maybe add a tele-converter.
Thanks very much for replying. Maybe that's what I will do. Keep the 400mm prime and get a converter. Any idea what converter would be compatible with my set up.
Hello Dave, welcome to the forum, I also have a 1D mark3 I purchased for it full frame sensor. I have a lot of lenses, film and digital, the film lenses are used with a adapter and fine focus is achieved through the live view function on the back of the camera. You will find a lot of good quality, cheap film lenses around but if this is not a option may I suggest the canon 75 to 300 mm as this will give you those close to intermediate shots and there are heaps of these old lenses around fairly cheap. If you opt for a 2X extender, this will double your focal length but you will lose to stops of light. A 1.4 extender will extend you focal length but you will lose 1 stop of light. I know you said you were into wildlife shot but your camera is also excellent for landscape as well. Crop C sensor add 1.6 times to the size of the lens so, 28mm becomes 44.8 and for us the 1D mark 3 is 28mm brilliant for landscape shots. I have one more suggestion, I have a 60D so it has a crop sensor and my 28mm becomes a 44.8 to get around this for my landscape shot I use a Professional HD AF 0.43 wide lens attachment which screws on to my 28mm lens so it becomes 19.3 mm. A 0.43 wide angle lens attachment screwed onto your 400mm lens would make it a 172mm focal length, something to think about maybe.
Hello, and welcome to the forum. It depends on where 400mm comes into the scheme of things. If you find that it is too long, I would suggest one of the 70-200 L lenses, or maybe the 70-300 L lens. If you find that 400mm is too short, what about the 60-600mm from Sigma, or the 150-600mm from Tamron. Gary
