I recently aquired an F-1, but have noticed that the rewind lever isn't black. Was this ever an original config or is this a mod done by a previous owner?

I have never seen that before. I guess that it is a repair with a none attainable part.

    Does it work ok?

Works fine, just never seen one like this before.

Look at it this way. You have a unique one off special.

Pretty sure that isn't original. Can you fit a flash shoe on over it?

Looking at my F-1 new, film rewind is black. As someone has said most likely a repair part. If it works go for it

As I said above, about the only issue might be that the flash shoe won't fit since the top crank looks a bit bigger than the original. If you don't use on-camera flash it really isn't an issue. Can't see any other down-side except a small reduction in its value due to a non-standard modification.
