The best way to start is get out and take heaps of images while you go about your daily business and then look at the crappy ones and ask yourself why are they crappy, this is how you improve and enjoy this interesting and stimulating past-time.

I haven't seen this post, but here is some basic info on them. there are two types prime lenses eg. 28mm, 35mm, 50 mm, 135 mm, 200mm, 300mm to name a few. the focal length is measured from the sensor plain to the aperture . second type is zoom lenses, an eg. of this is 24 - 104 mm, 75 - 600mm, this type allows you to zoom in on a subject or zoom out. compared to a zoom lens, the prime lenses can't zoom, to zoom with a prime you have to get physically closer or farther away. 28 mm and 35mm is used for landscape but this doesn't mean the can not be used for other images, 35, 50 85 and 135mm . can be used for streetscape and portraiture. Then we have longer lenses such as 300 to 600mm for farther distances and wildlife.This is a basic description, a good source of info is You tube. Any more questions please ask, we are here to help.
