I have a budget of maybe a little more than $800 but less if I can help it. Something that would be good enough for portrait and street photography for the most part. I’m confident that I want a Canon but I’m curious if the 70D is the right choice. If not, why and what would you prefer as an alternative?

ehangeto04, I use a 60D as my prime camera, I find it covers all aspects of photography and including videoing, I also have used the 80D which I find on par with the 60D, for me the 70D would be a good purchase.
A 70d or 80d with kit lens would be a solid choice to get started. There are a number of things to consider however, two that come to my mind in your situation are. Lens Choices: If you prefer mid range primes/zooms a mid level crop body is solid choice, but.... If you see yourself upgrading to full frame to use the wide end of your EF lenses for street scenes I would suggest stepping back a generation and getting a older 5d or 6d; saving a little bit on a camera that will last longer does open up saving for better lenses and that is where the money should be spent. Portability: A mirror-less setup would be more portable and less obtrusive. Traits you may like in street photography.
For street photography i thought mirrorless crop as well, on the side of budgets, with the next wave of new mirrorless cameras from canon coming out there are likely to be some of the current ones hitting the secondhand shelves at a good price, might be a bit of a wait though. i can't really suggest a specific camera for you as i don't feel i know enough about the cameras as i have only ever had the M50, all i can say is it has done me good from 800mm to 1-5x macro, having the EVF is a useful tool. Again others here have better knowledge outside my little bubble like how the lens line ups might offer you better chooses going forward etc. oh, welcome to canon, its a great system! as a side note, i shoot jpeg out of choice as i cant be asked to do editing so if you need a fast buffer rate for raw files that might be a limitation on the M50, with jpeg L it does great on fast frame rate.
