Hey everyone. Just joined this forum in the hopes that I can get some advice/help with my EOS M200.

I'm currently recording video and am finding the following issues with recording at 1080p/60 and 4K/24.

1080p/60: After recording footage, I try to review the footage on the camera. Tapping to play doesn't do anything. It tries to play the video but can't. I'm able to bypass this by tapping to play and then tapping the right button (flash) to fast forward the video. Then it'll play. Sometimes the video will play - but if the clip is 45s long, it will only play the first 20s before it stops and goes back to the still image of the video

4K/24: Some recordings will play - again, only a short clip - no the whole video. Other times I get a message saying something like 'can't play file'.

If I remove the SD card and play the videos on my laptop... the videos play for the whole recorded length, but I am often seeing random artefacts/glitches on Windows using VLC to view the files. If I view the files on a Mac, using QT, these artefacts/glitches present themselves with a short freeze in the video.

Photos on the M200 are fine. The issue is just around the two video formats described above.

I've contacted Canon support in the hopes that they can help identify the issue. I'm leaning towards a faulty SD card slot in the camera?

Anyone come across anything similar to what I've described?

    Thanks!

Few things, is the firmware up to the most recent version for the camera? It is very possible video could have had a few bugs they worked out in a firmware update.
Second before assuming a bad sd slot, how old is the SD card and how fast is the card? Unless you put lots of mileage on the card slot, I would suspect the memory itself before the hardware. This is easy to verify with a new SD card.

Mp4 is not a format that plays nice on windows and VLC doesn't fully support it, likely its a codec issue: https://www.easefab.com/mp4-tips/vlc-wont-play-mp4-solve.html Quick time should play it pretty well though, which is why i'm wondering if your card possibly has bad sectors.

    Thanks Johnsey.

I've hunted around Canon's website and cannot find any new firmware for the EOS M200. It's strange... all the review I watched pointed to Canon releasing a new firmware to support recording 24p... but I guess it never materialized? I thought about re-installing the current firmware... but I can't find that either. Even if I did...not sure that the camera would allow me to re-install the firmware.

The SD cards I've tried are all newer than the camera. They're SanDisk Ultra mSD XC cards. Both 128GB Class 10. I've used them in my Sony A73 and Osmo Pocket to record 4K and have no issues.

Update. I've had no luck with this issue. The camera will be going back to Canon to resolve for $324CAD via their repair program.

It sounds like you are experiencing some issues with your Canon EOS M200 when recording videos. While it is possible that the issue could be related to a faulty SD card slot, it's also possible that there may be other factors at play.

Here are a few suggestions that may help you troubleshoot the issue:
    1. Check the SD card - Make sure that the SD card you are using is compatible with the EOS M200 and that it meets the recommended specifications. Also, try formatting the SD card in-camera to ensure that it's optimized for use with the camera.

    2. Check the video settings - Make sure that you have the correct settings selected for the video you are recording. Double-check the resolution and frame rate to ensure that they are appropriate for your needs.

    3. Update firmware - Ensure that your camera is running the latest firmware. You can check for firmware updates on the Canon website.

    4. Reset camera settings - Try resetting the camera settings to their default values to see if this resolves the issue.

    5. Clean the camera contacts - Ensure that the camera contacts are clean and free of dirt or debris. This can be done using a clean, dry cloth.

    6. Test a different SD card - If possible, try recording video with a different SD card to see if the issue persists.

    7. Contact Canon support - If none of the above steps resolve the issue, contact Canon support for further assistance. They may be able to diagnose the issue and provide a solution.
    I hope this helps!
