My Canon 5D Mark IV is not recognised by my recently bought macbook air M2 macOS Sonoma 14.1 Researching problem I found a possible answer that involved changing 'Communication' setting in Menu. It worked once, then didn't work the next day.
Yesterday I plugged in my Mark III and the macbook picked it up straight away. So I have a 'work around', by transferring the SD card from IV to III.
The Mark IV works perfectly on my iMac M1 macOS Sonoma 14.1desktop.
I'm travelling soon to Antarctica and the Galapagus Islands.
I would love to solve this problem before I leave.
I have spent countless hours talking to Adobe for LR, Apple and Canon. No one could provide me with an answer.

Also I would consider skipping the camera altogether and just using a card reader transferring from the camera is infinity slower and ive been using CF card readers for almost 20 years on my DSLRs.

I don't use EOS Utility in either mac. The Canon person I spoke to said they havent created one fo the M2??? I tried a card reder that I hve here, that didn't work either. I might buy a better one today and see how that works. What EOS utility would you suggest?

https://www.usa.canon.com/support/eos-utilities this is the program i am referring to, I have had to install EOS Utility 1.x versions back in the mid 2000's to talk to my 20d, the EOS Utility verions 2 support mang 2007-2012 cameras, 5dmark 2 for example. Your 3 and 4 are both supported by the EOS Utility 3, but if you were running a ver early copy of 3 you may not have driver support for the mark 4.

There are different build for different operating systems, and the downloads pages have some quirks.
If yout tell if you go to the 5d2 and select a new operating system it doesn't give you options, you have to say Windows 7 or osx 10.11 El Capitan to be in the same era of when they supported and then it will list eos utility 2.14. You have a similar issue on the Mark 3 page, you have to dial back to Ventura to get the most recent 3.16 listed on the site now, apparently the latest build is not officially supporting Sonoma

For whatever reason the utility is not pulling up on the downloads page for the mark 4, in fact the operating system detection/selection is also not loading. But these quirks in version and listing versions for different models and OS versions is likely mostly a clerical issue with the people who update the webpages and these pages are 5 to 10 years old and not updated regularly,

All this said, wifi or USB connection I have never been able to connect any of my camera multiple DSLRS to my computer without using the utility to get the pairing to be recognized. But yes I do usually use the SD card slot, or my old CF card reader to transfer files much much faster. Unless its a small shoot of 20 - 50 images and I opt not to take the card out, because there is such thing as wear and tear on the cards.

Unfortunately, this seems to be a common issue with this camera and Mac. As Johnsey suggested, check if you're using the latest version of Canon EOS Utility for macOS. Also, ensure that your MacBook has the latest USB drivers installed. This software is necessary for connecting your camera to the computer and managing data.
