I would like some advice please. I have the canon Eos 5 + Canon RF 100-500. The problem I have is that the camera will not always auto focus unless I open the battery compartment and close it again. I don't have to remove the battery but just open the lid and close it again.
I don't use back button focus and I have several batteries that are fairly new. I use continuous shooting for wildlife.
I am having this problem regularly. Any advice welcome.

Hmmmmmm... so the focus system does not attempt to operate unless the door on the battery is open/closed. These should have ZERO to do with each other. The only electrical on the battery door is a trigger when door is shut to allow camera to know that it can be turned on.

My first thought is that is a long and slower lens and the AF will hunt sometimes if it is racked to far. But if it not even trying to focus that is a problem for sure, I cant imagine that battery door changing anything. AT least nothing different than turning on and off the camera essentially. If this is true then your system is probably faulty and the r5 will need the AF system and possibly the main board looked at by canon.

The only thing that springs to mind that you can do is ensure that your camera has the latest firmware installed.

Other than that, it maybe a trip to Canon.

I believe the camera door "disconnects" the battery when it is opened and reconnects it when it is closed. That's why the LED flashes right after the door closes. This is probably forcing a cold boot versus a warm boot from turning the power off and then back on.

What happens if you turn the camera off, remove the lens, then turn it back on and try to focus?

Does it do this with other lenses or just the RF 100-500?

Thank you for all the help. I now have a confession... I had not realised that when I put the camera covers on the lens I had accidently knocked the autofocus on the lens onto manual focus so it is now working fine!
