A quick introduction , I Used to do a lot of Film Photography in the 1980's, some small local swimsuit sales photoshoots in Miami and Ft Lauderdale, Florida. Got Married, had a family and stopped shooting. then when I got into classic and race cars I got a DSLR (Canon EOS T4i) Had some fun with it at car shows and racing events. Recently I started to get the photo bug again and My wife got me a Canon R8, I wanted to mess with Full Frame, Mirrorless and Video Capabilities. Well my Grand Daughter Started doing Travel Club Volleyball. And I started taking action pictures as well as video of the games. I found out real fast that the Lens I was using was not up to par to do indoor sports shooting. The stock Canon RF 24-50mm F4.5-6.3 lens aperture was not large enough to catch the fast action, I needed a 1/1000 shutter speed, even with my ISO set above 5000 I can't get good shots. I then Borrowed a friends Nikon Z9, with a Nikkor 70-200mm 1:2.8 VR and a whole new world opened up. the shots were clear bright and well 48MP helps a lot too. My problem is Retirement, less income and there is no way I will be able to swing a new Canon RF Lens with a 1.8 - 2.0 Aperture (Found several $2000 and up) Even with a EF adapter the lenses are still insane. and I feel I am loosing a ton of advantage using a cropped frame lens on a full frame sensor. on top of that the incredibly fast Auto Focus from the R8. My Camera History. Minolta Maxxum 330si RZ (SLR) Olympus OM-4Ti (SLR) NIKON N65 (SLR) Canon EOS Rebel T3i, T4i, T5 (DSLR) Canon R8 (Mirrorless/Full Frame)
I mean I agree for action shots the standard in the 70-200 range has always been 2.8. Canaon Nikon... sigma etc all have great pro level 2.8 zooms in the 1000-2000 price range depending on if you want stabilization, which may be less of an issue if shooting higher shutter for action. My initial thoughts regarding retirement is not to shift platforms to aggressive.... the EF lenses should be at a bit of a discount to their RF counterparts as the canon system moves forward with RF. I cant speak to Nikors, idk their lens system that well. But i think you will get plenty of miles of the existing EF line if your looking for fast l lens at a reasonable price.
