Hi all, New here but I have done some searching and just need some advice as to whether my 60D is struggling with AF (I understand this can need calibrating after some time?) or if I am struggling with DoF. I've noticed for a while that while my photos look good on the LCD screen preview, when I get home and get them on the PC to edit, at 100% scale they are blurry. I predominantly use AF (AF Servo when tracking moving subjects), but I manually select the AF point typically. Today, I took some photos of a helicopter at my local airfield. I was using my Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 USM lens but have noticed issues with my Sigma 18-200mm lens too. The below image was taken at ISO100, 190mm, f/9.0, 1/200s
Hi Ben, welcome to the forum. My initial guess would be that you need to up your shutter speed and make adjustments to your ISO and aperture to compensate. I'm sure there are others on this forum who know more about these settings than I so lets hear from them.
Using only the helicopter as an example.... DOF looks fine, houses drop off as I would expect in the distance, you 1/200 is a minimum for a 200 mm lens to hand hold. (reciprocal rule) So shooting a little fasted may help since you have a long lens. I would be curious what the 100% looks like cropped down to what should be a sharp edge, and if your struggles are new to the camera or lens or what. The 1st image yes it seems like it is a hair off focus, The second seems fine: If I zoom into the web crop it looks like it was sharp but just soft from zooming past the exported resize for the web. I also advise people to be careful looking at 100% because the image is not intended to be viewed or printed at such dpi, use 30-50% at least, Images should be sharp at 300dpi, and viewing that way can help. At 100% you will see a softness to edges, this is not missed focus. Its not uncommon to pixel peep and find things to worry about. I guess what I am saying is the sample size is small here to judge one way or another if a problem exists.
