Hey Thrill Seekers, I have a vintage (2005) EF 85mm f1.2. The rubber around the base of the lens is decomposed to the point that it's sticky and comes off on my fingers when I use the lens. I sent it in to Canon who just bounced it back with the offer to sell me a new lens. No parts left. So...any idea: A) what this part is called, so I can scrounge E-Bay? B) If this part is a cosmetic for grip only, or if it's a dust shield? If it's not a critical part, I could try doing without it (it's gross to use) and if it's not a dust shield, I might even try to print a replacement. Share your thoughts.
i searched rubber grip band lenses on ebay and a few come up but not a direct one for your lens, few options, look for one on the internet, phone / email repair shops see if anyone has the right one. get a generic one, measure yours and lens the one the proposed one is for. get some tread tape or grip tape, strip of ribbed rubber and make your own, i'd certainly remove the old sticky one, had a pair of tasco binoculars did that and didn't find anything to stabilize it but it was along time ago try searching youtube for vids on stabilizing rubber on lenses etc, might get lucky
There is stuff like a silicone spray to use on rubber boots that have been near the sea or in! to stop/lessen similar issues
