Although I have a EOS50D that I tether with I'm also interested in these smaller mirrorless cameras. Does anyone know if any of the Canon ones will tether, preferable with a cable to something like Lightroom. Michael
Unfortunately it doesn't seem like you can tether to lightroom with the mirrorless cameras from Canon. I found a supported list of cameras that are supported here: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/tethered-camera-support.html
I do believe they are the future, since they can provide the same quality picture and are more compact. There also isn't really a reason that limits why tethering isn't supported, it's just some software changes
I'm fairly new to Canon, and have an M50ii, bought mainly for macrophotography. I've bought Helicon Focus which comes with Helicon Remote. The software can connect to the camera using a USB cable which I've done a lot, and by wifi, which I've not done. When tethered, Remote has control of the exposure and exposure mode, plus of course the focus, when it can do focus brackets automatically. I guess other softwares must be able to tether in a similar way. Alas DPP4 doesn't seem to have the facility. I've got a Canon program called "EOS Utility" which definitely does connect the camera to a computer, although I've not used it.
Canon software has minimal overlap, DPP is simply the RAW file editor, EOS utility mages communication of file transfer and tether. From what I remember, while there capture on LR streamlines it a bit, the software should still rely on the canon drivers installed by eos utility to actually communicate with the camera. It has been ages since I played with tethering however.
