Can anybody give me their opinion on trying a cannon ef-s 24mm F-2.8 on a viltrox speedbooster 0.71x opposed to the ef-m 22mm pancake? Currently own a cannon m50 and already own the viltrox filter. Any suggestion will help Thanks
i have the M50 and the 22mm m mount, i don't have the others you mentioned, i just posted this in this months 'bokeh' challenge using the 22mm out of interest what type of things are you wanting to shoot or are you using the M50 for video? i have a pretty wide range of stuff i shoot with the M50 from 800mm wildlife to macro
As an owner of the Viltrox speed booster and an M50, I have to say that I absolutely love it. However lens distortion is slightly increased by the addition of the extra glass which may not be of the same quality found in Canon lenses also resulting in slightly softer images. Firstly one thing you need to know about the Viltrox speed booster is that it is meant to turn your crop sensor camera body into almost a full frame sensor by reducing the crop factor down to 1.1x from 1.6x. EFS lenses are specifically designed for Canon Crop sensor camera bodies and are not compatible with Full Frame bodies. With the above in mind, regardless of whether an EFS lens can be mounted on the Viltrox speed booster, the question remains, should it be??? If you use an EFS lens on the speed booster you're going to get a huge vignette around the edge of your image as the inner glass at the mount end is a much smaller diameter to reduce production costs and therefore offer a cheaper product to the end user. Something else you need to take in to consideration is the focal length of the 2 lenses. On the M50 the efm 22mm has a full frame equivalent focal length of around 35mm because of the 1.6x crop. The efs 24mm on the M50 with a standard canon adapter will give you an equivalent full frame focal length of around 38mm because of the 1.6x crop. The efs 24mm on the M50 with a Viltrox speed booster will give you an equivalent full frame focal length of around 27mm because of the 1.1x crop. As you can see, the speed boosted lens will theoretically allow you to get more into your frame (theoretically because of the first point about vignetting). F stop wise, the Viltrox booster should drop the 24mm F2.8 down to F2.0 to match the 22mm lens but as previously mentioned you'll loose a small amount of sharpness and gain a slight increase in distortion an huge vignette. So to sum up: The Viltrox booster is not designed to work with EFS lenses and for your application in video I'd say no, it is not a usable setup. You'd be better off looking to buy an older/second hand EF 24mm F2.8 IS USM (expensive) or an EF 28mm F2.8 (relatively cheap) as they are both full frame lenses and will work with your Viltrox speed booster. Hope this helps and that you managed to stay awake whilst reading it. Cheers G.
