Hi, this is my first post here and I'm looking for a little help with my FTB. I bought it recently on ebay and when I use a shutter speed below 60th sec the mirror does not return after firing the shutter. It goes back only when the film advance lever is used. The faster speeds are unnafected. It was also doing the same thing at 60th sec but after firing the shutter many times at this speed it seemed to fix itself. No such luck from 30th sec though. The shutter itself seems to be working fine, it's just that the mirror gets stuck. Any help gratefully received, thanks!
Well you tried the suggestion I would have had to try firing it. Maybe someone on here has an old FTB or similar era Canon and has worked through the problem, but generally carefully dry firing will start getting parts moving again and bring back some life. Problem is with older cameras the mechanics do get gunked up over the years. Camera's used to get serviced to make sure they were working as designed, news papers, schools and wedding photographers did this very regularly as the cost of maintenance before things started failing. This is what would be called a CLA, You could see if there is anyone near you that still works on old camera's and could take a look at the shutter/ mirror mechanism,
Thanks for your reply. There is a place near by but I think the cost of a service would be more than the value of the camera. The shutter seems fine, it's just the mirror. I suppose this won't impact on the actual images, it's just annoying...
True the cost of the service could be more than the value of the camera. But once done, you should have a reliable camera that you can use for years to come. Plus you have access to a load of FD mount lenses at a good price. Gary
Thanks, the ebay seller gave me a full refund (also there is a tiny bit of fungus on the lens) and told me to just keep it! So I have a free FTB with some leeway to get it repaired. I love the camera, its solid simplicity is right up my street. I have a few FD lenses already and now I can let go of my fiddly and frustrating A1!
