I am going crazy, I don't know how many hours I have spent googling the answer to this: I am looking for a DSLR that supports tethering via Image Capture on macOS. It’s important that it works out of the box because we are setting this up together with a database solution (Filemaker) and the criteria is that it should work with Image Capture. I tried my old Canon SD950 but I couldn't get it to work. It shows up in Image Capture, and I can download the pictures taken, but the File > Take Picture function is greyed out. I have tried two Macs, one iMac and one MBP, both with Catalina. Tethering should work with Image Capture according to Apple: https://support.apple.com/guide/image-capture/imgcp1027/mac DS I just want to take descent pictures wth of the Mac, what should I buy? Regarding price it should be in the lower end. Pleaae help! Thanks!
Well generall DLSRs support tethering via their software supplied by the manufacturer, in canon's case that would be the EOS utility. And adobe does a good job of integrating the the tethering capability. The situation your describing doesn't fit a photographers normal workflow need so your not going to see much for anybody troubleshooting such an issue. . The other situation to consider is that your using apples image capture software which relies on compatibility with the cameras, which is dozens of makers and thousands of cameras so the compatibility is going to be generic and likely not updated, either the drivers play nice or they don't. Same could be said for any general purpose windows program. The maker of the OS is going to put it on the camera manufacturer to make the feature work and the camera manufacture will want you to use their preferred option. Your point and shoot camera does not as you stated and a inexpensive p&s I would not imagine they added such a feature, where as DSLR users in the studio like to use tethering to quickly see updates from lighting changes. I would suggest trying to borrow a dslr or two from friends and see how they work with that capture program from apple as Apple will not post a list of supported cameras.
