I have a Canon 90D with an EF-S 18-55mm lens. I have wanted to get back into film photography so have just picked up a Canon EOS 850 Autofocus SLR 35mm Film Camera for £10 on E-Bay. Will my kit lens fit this camera or do I have to buy a lens?
You need to buy a lens, canon EF lenses are full frame (or 35mm for film), your EF-S lens is made for the smaller crop sensor, it would produce heavy vignetting not being large enough to cover the frame. On the flip side, if you invest in nicer EF lenses they work on crop bodies as well as full frame.
As a thought. Grab yourself a used 50mm f1.8, and see how you get on with using it. If you like film enough, then expand your lens selection. Gary
There is nothing like viewing your images for the first time when it comes to film. Here is a thought you can pick up FD and FL lenses and fit them onto your camera with an FD to EOS adapter, this adapter will need to have glass in it to help focus to infinity. Put the camera in Aperture priority or manual, same as with a digital camera. This will open up a heap of lens types for your camera, I have a F1000 and a F 100 film camera, they work fine. You of course will have to manual focus.
The EF-S lens won’t mount on the film body. Even if it would, you’d get vignetting as mentioned above. Also, some of the EF-S lenses have the rear elements far enough behind the mount that they would interfere with the mirror…. The EF 50mm mentioned above is a good first choice for the film body, should be available used for <usd75, and will work just fine on the digital body. Roscoe
According to the digital camera world site, you may need EF-S lenses because they’re specifically designed to work with crop-sensor Canons. EF lenses do work on crop sensors too, and there’s one in this roundup you should be sure not to miss.
